Just in time for the 1st anniversary of the implementation of the unitary patent, Romania initiated ratification of the Unified Patent Court (UPC) agreement on May 31, 2024. Consequently, on September 1, Romania will become the 18th European country in which the unitary patent will take effect. In parallel, Romania will also be part of the Unified Patent Court (no information on a possible local division is currently available).

For those of you who would like to obtain protection in Romania and should apply for a unitary patent before September 1, please note that it is possible to request a postponement of registration after September 1, and thus get protection in all 18 states.

As usual, Brandon IP remains at your disposal should you require any further information about the extension of the unitary patent to Romania.
