After Tunisia, Morocco, Cambodia and Laos, the European patent continues its extension beyond geographical Europe. On December 13, 2024 Costa Rica, represented by its Minister of Justice and Peace, signed a validation agreement with the European Patent Office (EPO). As the 7th state to sign such an agreement, Costa Rica becomes the 1st American state to allow recognition of a European patent on its territory. Such extraterritorial recognition of the European patent opens the possibility for European applicants to use their European patent economically in Costa Rica, with a simplified and therefore less costly procedure.
We will be sure to let you know when this agreement comes into force and how it will be implemented.
